Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ)

Geological information is essential for a country like Japan, located at a tectonically active area, to ensure a safe and secure society. The Geological Survey of Japan gathers, compiles, and provides geological information and promotes its wider use. We also develop technologies to overcome various difficulties related to global environment protection, exploration of minerals and energy resources, and natural disaster mitigation, and coordinate international cooperation as a national representative.

Title Research on the risk of anthropogenic materials in marine sediments
Job Summary and Essential/Desirable Skills and Experience The National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (AIST) is engaged in research and development to evaluate the diffusion and accumulation of anthropogenic materials in the sea and their risk to the ecosystem as part of geological information maintenance that contributes to building a safe and secure society. In particular, AIST aims to establish investigation techniques for microplastics deposited on the seafloor and expand these techniques to coastal and deep-sea areas to elucidate the actual impact of microplastics on social activities. We are looking for highly motivated researchers with advanced expertise in the dynamics and sedimentation of particles and ecosystems in the marine environment who will promote the project with high ideals to solve social and scientific issues. We welcome those who do not have a doctoral degree but who are motivated to utilize their practical experience at a company for the social implementation of AIST's R&D.
