German Aerospace Center (DLR) and AIST strengthen collaboration in quantum technology through MOU revision

On June 27th, 2025, Mr. ISHIMURA Kazuhiko, President and CEO of AIST, Prof. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, and Dr. Anke Pagels-Kerp, Chair of Executive Board and Divisional Board Member for Space respectively of DLR, concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to add quantum technology as a new area of research collaboration under the supervision of Mr. KIUCHI Minoru, Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy, Cabinet Office, who was visiting DLR,

In the field of quantum technology, DLR has launched the Quantum Computing Initiative and an innovation center for joint development of quantum computers, and is advancing the industrialization of quantum computers. AIST is advancing the development of quantum computing resources, evaluation facilities for next-generation quantum computers, and incubation functions at Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI technology (G-QuAT). G-QuAT is collaborating with universities, companies, and research institutions from home and abroad to build a business ecosystem for quantum technology.

The two organizations signed the MOU in 2017 with the aim of promoting research cooperation in the field of energy. This time, the MOU has been revised to include new areas of collaboration, such as quantum computers, hybrid computing combining quantum computers and high-performance computing (HPC), with the aim of accelerating the social implementation of quantum technology.

With this signing as a starting point, we will further deepen the cooperative relationship that has been built between the two organizations in the cutting-edge field of quantum technology and accelerate concrete and substantial collaboration between the research communities of both countries.
