Social Background of Research

In order to improve production efficiency in industrial processes, it is better to raise the operating temperature of plant, so there is a growing need to make plant parts more heat-resistant. In addition, automobile motors, generator turbines and so on become smaller in size and generate larger output. Consequently, they are used at higher temperatures and pressures. For that reason, the material for O-rings, which are parts for safety, must also be resistant to high temperatures and high pressures.

Summary

The researchers have developed a heat-resistant O-ring that is highly durable and economical by combining a fluoroelastomer (FKM) and super growth single-walled carbon nanotubes (SG-SWCNTs). Samples will start to be provided from TACC, with the goal of launching from technology transfer recipient companies in FY2018.

The developed heat-resistant O-ring is planned for use in a high temperature range, up to 230˚ C. In order to realize this O-ring, TACC designed the material to meet initial strength requirements and to maintain its strength after being exposed to a high temperature, 230˚ C, for a prolonged period. The material is also designed to have a compression set that maintains its sealability for prolonged periods of time and to be resistant to various chemicals. Furthermore, in order to keep the O-ring economical, TACC has also developed a low-cost mass production process.
