About AIST Kyushu

Contributing to Industry and Society in the Kyushu Region

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) operates 12 research sites across Japan, and the Kyushu Center serves as its sole research base in the Kyushu and Okinawa region.

At the Kyushu Center, we conduct research and development of advanced measurement and sensing technologies to enable the smart transformation of key regional industries such as manufacturing, and promote the transfer of these technologies to industry.

In addition, as a regional gateway for the AIST group, the Kyushu Center plays a role in disseminating information and identifying industrial needs. It also serves as a hub for industry-academia-government collaboration, supporting the enhancement of technological capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises and contributing to the creation of regional innovation.

Building of AIST Kyushu

Director's Message

The AIST Kyushu Center strives to strengthen the technological capabilities and competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and contribute to regional economic development through activities such as the formation of regional consortia, joint research, and human resource development aimed at revitalizing local industries. In addition, the Center is strengthening collaboration with public research institutes and local governments in order to establish coordinated support systems with municipalities that play a key role for SMEs.

Within the Kyushu Center, the Sensing Technology Research Institute, positioned as a core R&D organization, advances the development of sensing technologies to address societal challenges while contributing to the enhancement of Japan’s industrial competitiveness. In particular, the Institute focuses on smart manufacturing sensing technologies, promoting manufacturing DX (digital transformation) and GX (green transformation) while also developing environments for semiconductor-related research and prototyping. Through these efforts, it aims to further strengthen the competitiveness of industries that are a strength of the Kyushu and Okinawa region. Furthermore, through integrated operation with the Center’s industry–academia–government collaboration functions, the Kyushu Center enhances its one-stop capability for bridging technologies to industry.

Sensing Technology Research Institute In order to realize a smart society (Society 5.0), it is essential to extract information from the physical space where people and objects exist, transfer it to cyberspace, and create new value that helps solve societal challenges. As sensing technologies serve as the source of such information, the Sensing Technology Research Institute develops technologies for extracting high-value information, including manufacturing sensing for DX and GX, environmental monitoring for a resilient society, human sensing for well-being, and their underlying core technologies.
By improving the quality of information obtained through innovative sensing technologies, the Institute aims to implement differentiated new services in society, thereby contributing to the resolution of societal challenges in Japan and the enhancement of industrial competitiveness.
Integrated Research Center for Wellbeing In response to the challenges of a declining population and an aging society, improving productivity and fostering highly skilled human resources in advanced manufacturing have become urgent priorities. The Research Center collaborates with private-sector partners that share the vision of establishing manufacturing hubs through industry–academia–government collaboration, and aims to build such hubs as a common platform unique to Japan.
To achieve this, the Center leverages AI technologies, digital transformation (DX), and robotics, while promoting the unification and standardization of robot command systems and programming languages through open middleware. By integrating robots, machine tools, AI, and digital twin technologies, the Center advances research on next-generation manufacturing systems.
