Social Background of Research

Conventional processing methods typically use one physical or chemical phenomenon, and have disadvantages associated with the principles of each processing method. If processing methods could be combined properly according to their purpose, then it is expected that it would be possible to develop new processing technology with dramatically better functions and effects compared to conventional methods, and develop unique, superior products with never before seen functions using dramatically improved processing capabilities.


Summary

The researchers have developed an ultra-compact DEEL combined processing machine that can machine small-diameter holes and narrow grooves with a high aspect ratio, which were previously difficult to machine.

The developed processing machine can process high aspect ratio shapes for metal with almost no debris and can also machine slanted holes and grooves. It does this by combining processing methods with two different principles on the same machine: laser processing and electrochemical machining. In addition to the low energy consumption that is characteristic of combined processing, the researchers have achieved an ultra-compact and lightweight design with a width of 430 mm, height of 400 mm, depth of 300 mm, and weight of 16 kg. This is a size that can be carried by one person and can be used to do machining at any location.

The developed DEEL combined processing machine is expected to contribute to the manufacturing of metal products like no other in the world, including small-diameter multi-hole injection nozzles and ultra-small-diameter stents.
