National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) commenced its 6th Medium-to-Long-Term Target Period in April 2025. Its mission is the continuous creation of innovations that contribute to solving social problems and strengthening Japan’s industrial competitiveness. Located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, AIST Tohoku promotes cutting-edge research, development, and technology transfer in support of this mission, while also fostering regional innovation to revitalize industry in the Tohoku region.
AIST Tohoku is home to Research Institute for Chemical Process Technology, which conducts research and development on resource circulation technologies, including carbon dioxide separation and recovery, plastic recycling, process engineering, as well as system design and assessment technologies, with the aim of realizing a sustainable circular society.
In fiscal year 2023, the Nanomaterial Evaluation and Prototyping Platform was established to strengthen the region’s industrial competitiveness. By introducing advanced facilities for the design, prototyping, and evaluation of nanomaterials and integrating them with technologies accumulated through AIST’s research activities, the platform supports companies in materials development, prototyping, evaluation, and commercialization.
AIST Tohoku also serves as a gateway to AIST’s nationwide research network. Through close collaboration with the Tohoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, local governments, public testing/research laboratories, universities, and other organizations, we work to address the challenges faced by industry and local communities, thereby contributing to the sustainable growth and competitiveness of the Tohoku region.
If there is anything we can do to help address your societal or industrial challenges, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will leverage the capabilities and expertise of AIST’s nationwide research network to support your needs. We look forward to working with you.
