AIST Hokkaido

About AIST Hokkaido

Based in Toyohira Ward, Sapporo, the Hokkaido Center drives “biomanufacturing” as its core theme. It aims to establish genomic-driven technologies for valuable substance production, with a particular focus on two areas: producing useful substances using plants and microorganisms, and analyzing, controlling, and utilizing protein and nucleic acid functions. Concurrently, the center collaborates with the Tsukuba Center on methane hydrate utilization.

To foster regional partnership, the center also operates the Sapporo Souen Site near JR Soen Station, which serves as AIST's Hokkaido hub for industry-academia-government collaboration.

Director's Message

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) aims to solve social issues and strengthen industrial competitiveness. With 12 research sites and around 2,300 researchers, AIST leads pioneering R&D across eight fields. In fiscal year 2025, it will launch its 6th Medium-Term Plan, accelerating the implementation of research outcomes and reinforcing its role in Japan’s innovation ecosystem.

The AIST Hokkaido Center drives cutting-edge R&D as AIST’s base in Hokkaido, serving as a hub for technology transfer and industry collaboration. With “Bio-Manufacturing” as its flagship research, it advances regional innovation in line with local industry and policy initiatives.

The AIST Hokkaido Center hosts two research units: Biomanufacturing and Process Research Center (BPRC) and Energy Process Research Institute. The BPRC advances Japan’s Bioeconomy Strategy by developing sustainable production technologies using microorganisms and plants, promoting a circular bioeconomy and agricultural-industrial collaboration in Hokkaido. The Energy Process Research Institute focuses on utilizing methane hydrates, a key energy resource in Japan’s coastal waters. Through these efforts, AIST Hokkaido addresses challenges in resource circulation, food, and energy.

To accelerate social implementation, AIST Hokkaido promotes joint research with companies and universities while leveraging AIST’s expertise to support local industries. By expanding AIST’s technologies to industry, it contributes to Hokkaido’s industrial development.

In April 2025, the Sapporo Soen Site will open on the 2nd floor of Air Water no Mori in Chuo-ku, Sapporo. Serving as a hub for industry collaboration and foster industry-academia-government partnerships. We welcome your inquiries and look forward to connecting with you.

Research Units

Unit Name Unit Overview Unit Page
Biomanufacturing Process Research Center The Biomanufacturing Research Center is the primary research center at AIST dedicated to “biomanufacturing,” a field with significant potential to transform the industrial sector. We are developing a variety of advanced technologies, including microbial production of materials, the development of high-performance plants, the discovery of useful microorganisms and biological resources, and bio-AI technologies. Through active collaboration between our researchers in microbiology, plant science, and information science and the industrial sector, we aim to accelerate the Bio-X (BX) initiative and realize a true bioeconomy society.
Energy Process Research Institute The Energy Process Research Institute promotes the development of unconventional methane hydrate resources and effective resource utilization technologies that contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality, thereby supporting the creation of new industries.
