The 3rd AREW (Asia Renewable Energy Workshop) was held in Hanoi, Vietnam

 The 3rd Asia Renewable Energy Workshop (AREW) was held in Hanoi, Vietnam on December 7 - 9, 2016.
It was hosted by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and the New Energy Foundation of Japan (NEF), as well as the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), with support from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) of Vietnam and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE). This workshop is a part of a project to foster the demanded researchers to adopt and disseminate renewable energy to ASEAN countries and Japan, where the demand for renewable energy is substantially growing for the mitigation of global warming,  and was held following the successes of the AREWs held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and at the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) of Indonesia in FY 2014 and 2015, respectively.  The venue was the Hanoi Club Hotel located on the lakefront of West Lake in Hanoi. About 250 people from governments, research agencies, universities, and companies of nine countries of ASEAN, India and Japan attende s this workshop. 
Dr. Yoshiro Owadano (Director-General of FREA), Dr. Shigeru Niki (Director of RENRC), Dr. Kinya Sakanishi (Deputy Director-General of FREA), Dr. Youhei Uchida (Leader of Shallow Geothermal and Hydrogeology Team, RENRC) and Dr. Tetsuya Kogaki (Leader of Wind Power Team, RENRC) participated in this conference. Dr. Owadano made opening remarks and closing summary speech on the first day. Other members made their each presentation in parallel session and commented in the overall summary session on the second day. Status reports from the various countries and agencies related to renewable energy were given, and information was actively disseminated. And opinions were exchanged on the initiatives to overcome facing obstacles and modalities for accelerating international cooperation.
On the final day, December 9, the technical tour was held for visiting a facility to generate energy from waste and a research facility of shallow-geothermal energy use in the outskirts of Hanoi, thereby deepening the participants' knowledge of these technologies.
