RD20 (Research and Development 20 for Clean Energy Technologies)
~International conference on clean energy technologies with gathering leaders from the top research institutes of G20 member countries~

Breakthrough innovation is key for achieving virtuous cycle of environment and growth by developing new technology solutions for the energy transitions. For breakthrough innovations, it is important to make the best use of the world-leading expertise and knowledge. Ideas and experiences associated with such global expertise and knowledge are expected to be a catalyst to produce concrete actions for promoting innovation.

The G20 members, which account for major portion of the global CO2 emissions, are expected to play a leadership role by leading the innovation and development of clean energy technologies for promoting energy transitions. In particular, leading R&D institutes from the G20 members, which carry out the world’s cutting-edge technological development in the clean energy field, could play a significant role in maximizing the global potential of innovation by developing research alliances among the members, thereby accelerating international collaborations including joint R&D activities. Within this context, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Davos meeting in January 2019, announced his initiative, to invite topmost experts from G20 member countries to combine forces in accelerating innovations in the context of climate change.

The international conference “Research and Development 20 for clean energy technologies (RD20)” will bring together the heads of the leading R&D institutes from the G20 members. The RD20 will provide participants an opportunity for exchanging R&D activities and experiences, best practices and ideas related to the current and emerging issues associated with the clean energy technologies in their respective countries, and to explore the potential of international collaboration including the joint R&D projects among the leading R&D institutes.

The 1st RD20 conference will be on the current trends and future vision concerning the R&D in the field of clean energy technology in the G20 member nations. This year, the conference will focus discussions on significance of international collaboration among leading R&D institutes of G20 members, and hydrogen, CCUS, and similar related topics from a technology perspective. AIST as a host will make its best efforts to make the conference a fruitful one by facilitating the sharing of experiences and developing mutual cooperation in priority areas among the G20 members with the clean energy technologies.
