Activities
MEL carries out research activities in information and systems science, mechanics and design, materials technology, production technology, energy technology, robotics and intelligent machines, and bioengineering. It also has significant involvement in national projects on micromachines, the ecofactory, and advanced mechatronics.

MEL welcomes technical enquiries by letter or telephone. Meetings for consultation can also be arranged.

Transfer
Transfer of the results of our research activities to outside organizations by various means, including technical training, can be arranged by contract on the basis of mutual consultation.

Laboratory
Visits
MEL welcomes visits by members of other research organizations and private industry, from both within Japan and overseas.

Joint
Research
MEL conducts joint research with private industry on subjects of mutual interest, on a cost-sharing basis. Contracts for these research projects are drawn up according to the "Rules of Joint Research" of AIST.

Symposium
Monthly laboratory seminars are held in the conference hall at MEL, and Technical Symposia are held twice a year in Tokyo. Both of these events are open to the public without charge.

Research
Arrangements can be made for the laboratory to conduct research sponsored by outside organizations, according to AIST regulations.

Services
MEL provides testing services in certain fields. Fees for these services are fixed by the Japanese Government.

Facilities
The automobile proving ground at the AIST Tsukuba Research Center No. 2 is available to outside users at fees fixed by the Japanese Government.

Patent
Licensing
The property of inventions and contrivances produced through research activities belongs to the Japanese Government. Those who wish to implement inventions are requested to submit an application to the Japan Industrial Technology Association (JITA).
