Activities
TRAO maintains the facilities of the eight institutes in Tsukuba area and the common facilities. It is also responsible for the publicity of research outcomes and the welfare and care of staff members.
Patent
Administration
According to the "Regulation for On-Duty Invention, AIST", the right to receive patents or other privileges for inventions, contrivances and creation made by employees of AIST Institutes is attributed to the Director-General of AIST.

In the Tsukuba Research Center, clerical works of patent application are collectively executed by the Patent Administration Division, TRAO. This Division is also partly in charge of management of AIST-owned patents.

The industrial proprietary rights managed by AIST have already been implemented widely in private sectors.

Activities
As a part of the Research Collaboration Program to achieve:
  1. rapid expansion of creative research
  2. bringing-up of creative researchers
  3. accelerated establishment of joint research system

through the activation of exchange and collaboration among researchers in industrial, academic and governmental sectors of Japan, Tshukuba Symposia are held by TRAO whenever necessary.

In order to enhance knowledge and understanding of science and technology and to improve communications with local citizens, the series of Public Science Lectures for young persons are held during the summer vacation.

For the purpose of disseminating overseas information related to research exchange, the Overseas State of Affairs Forum is held once a month, with reports on research environment, R&D trends and others by AIST researchers and officials who studied at overseas institutes, made joint researches with foreign researchers and inspected research organizations. The first-hand experiences of reporters on research environment, daily habits, cultural differences and educational systems attract interests of a large audience, including workers in other institutes and local citizens of Tsukuba Science City.

Laboratory
Visits
Eight AIST Institutes in Tsukuba area and TRAO welcome visits by members of other research organizations and private industries both domestic and overseas.

A written appointment for visit is accepted by TRAO and Technical Information Offices of respective Institutes. Public Opening is offered during the Science and Technology Week around the Day of Invention.

Patent
Licensing
Those who wish to implement inventions and contrivances by AIST are requested to submit an application to the Japan Industrial Technology Association (JITA), to obtain an approval by the Director-General of AIST and to conclude an implementation contract.

After having made a contract, the applicant may receive technical advice from AIST Institute for improving relevant products.
