Report on the VIGMR-GSJ-CCOP Geothermal Workshop

On Monday, February 20, 2017, FREA held a workshop on geothermal heat pump systems at the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR). This workshop was held as part of the “Development of Renewable Energy for Ground-Source Heat Pump (GSHP) System in the CCOP Regions”, a subproject of the CCOP-GSJ Groundwater Project Phase III. The Vietnamese participants came from a wide range of fields including not only geology, but also energy related research institutes, agriculture related ministries and research institutes, and universities. From Japan, Professor Emeritus Isao Takashima from Akita University, as well as four representatives from AIST, attended the workshop, making a total of 44 participants.
At the workshop, Dr. Tran Tan Van (Director of VIGMR) gave a welcome speech. Next, Youhei Uchida (Leader of the Shallow Geothermal and Hydrogeology Team) made a presentation outlining GSHP systems and their construction methods. Then, Mr. Tran Trong Thang (VIGMR) made a presentation on the potential of geothermal energy in Vietnam and expectations for geothermal systems. This was followed by Mr. Vu Ngoc Duc (Institute of Energy, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam), who made a presentation on the present situation and future prospects for energy problems in Vietnam.
After lunch, a tour was held to the geothermal heat pump system installed in VIGMR in October 2016, and Mr. Tran Trong Thang showed drilling methods specialized for heat exchange wells and explained the difficulties encountered during construction. After the tour Dr. Arif Widiatmojo (Researcher in the Shallow Geothermal and Hydrogeology Team) gave a lecture on methods of analyzing GSHP system measurement data. Then, using pre-analyzed measurement data from the GSHP system of Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, individual participants engaged in practical training on data analysis using laptop computers and Microsoft Excel.
In this workshop, there were many young researchers among the Vietnamese participants, and after the workshop was over, several of them requested detailed materials and literature on geothermal heat pump systems, so there are great expectations for renewable energy in Vietnam. Taking advantage of this human exchange in Vietnam, we would like to expand the project, such as extending the CCOP Geothermal Subproject to the field of agriculture.
