Research paper : The advanced geological researches and fundamental national land information (M. Saito)−23−Synthesiology - English edition Vol.3 No.1 (2010) For society to continue sustainable development, human beings must have a scientifically based understanding of the natural environment. The GMJ Tomochi sheet and the GMJ in general are expected to play a crucial role in providing this understanding.Geological Survey of Japan: 1:1,000,000 Geological Map of Japan (3rd ed.), Geological Survey of Japan (1992).Y. AuthorMakoto SaitoCompleted a masters degree in earth science at Nagoya University in 1989. Employed at the Geological Survey of Japan in 1990. Joined the Institute of Geoscience, AIST, as Senior Researcher in 2001, leader of Seamless Geoinformation Research Group, Institute of Geology and Geoinformation since 2009. Works mainly on the geology of accretionary complexes from Kyushu to the northern Ryukyu Islands. Primary author for four 1:50,000 sheets and four 1:200,000 sheets of the GMJ and co-author for two 1:200,000 sheets. Also active in dissemination of geological information. Discussions with Reviewer1 Use of geological data collected by other institutionsQuestion and comment (Akira Ono, AIST)This article allows readers from other fields to understand that the GMJ 1:50,000 is created, and reviewed from various viewpoints based on the latest geological findings and with consideration of how it will be used by society. It is also an excellent paper of Type 2 Basic Research in its structure and content.I got the impression that the creation of a geological map, as described in this paper, is an ambitious work that predicts the three-dimensional structure of a vast subsurface space from geological data obtained from sparse outcrops on the surface. Perhaps there is not much borehole data in the region mapped,
