Tsukuba Innovation Arena for Nanotechnology (TIA-nano)Nanoelectronics Carbon nanotubesPower electronics NーMEMSEnhancing the advanced infrastructures andflexible materials handling in the super clean room, nanoelectronics research core is forming attractive R&D framework where researchers gather under-one-roof from manufacturers such as makers of devices, materials and equipments. AIST pilot plant has started mass production of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The SWCNT samples have been supplied to several companies and universities to create a new industry based on SWCNT. This is one of the activities of AIST to extend the developed technologies to society.Micronano open innovation center (MNOIC) was established to implement the open innovation by the industry-academia collaboration using N-MEMS core infrastructure. Companies are able to use the 8/12 inch MEMS pilot line as their own, a facility which would be difficult for each company to invest in individually. An industry-funding-based open innovation consortiumTPEC (Tsukuba Power-Electronics Constellation) was established, to which dominant companies from material to electric system gather to accelerate the industrialization of SiC power electronics. TPEC will boost up the efficiency and speed of R&D by constructing distribution and evaluation chains of the SiC prototypes. It will also conduct the education of researchers and engineers who will contribute to the expansion of the future market.【TIA-nano’s open innovation model 】 With four perspectives for creating the open innovation hub including systems taking advantage of Japan’s manufacturing strength and Tsukuba’s regional asset, TIA-nano is creating a global industry-academia-government collaboration center over the public research and education platform to implement openinnovations.【TIA-nano's efforts ーcore research domains and core infrastructuresー】 ●Six core research domains of TIA-nano are formed to use the state-of-the-art facilities of the organizing institutes in Tsukuba city. TIA-nano is aggressively implementing industry-academia-government collaborative research including several national flagship R&D projects.●Core infrastructures of TIA-nano facilities accumulated in AIST, NIMS and KEK include several advanced prototyping foundry such as super clean room, nano-measurement facilities, nano-processing facilities, and photon factory. Part of the TIA-nano infrastructure is open to public users. Human resources development is promoted using these facilities under the collaboration of University of Tsukuba and other related universities.Global nanotechnology research complex to implement open innovationsTsukuba Innovation Arena for Nanotechnology (TIA-nano) was established under the leadership of AIST, National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), the University of Tsukuba and High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) with the support of Keidanren. TIA-nano is aiming to create a global nanotechnology research and education complex in Tsukuba, where the world’s most advanced nanotechnology research facilities and talents are gathered.Four perspectives required for an open innovation hubSystem designed to make the most of our advantages in manufacturing System designed to make the most of Tsukuba’s advantagesNanoelectronicsPower electronicsNanoーgreenCarbon nanotubesNanoーmaterials safetyN−MEMSNanodevice Research FoundryNanotech Open User FacilitiesNetworking School of Nanotechnology Assessment of performance and safety to support our advantagesAccumulation of intellectual assetsGlobal collaboration among successful organizationsSix core research domainsThree core infrastruc-turesMaking most of our advantage in the advanced materials industryDevice and materialsVertical collaborationOpen innovationUnder one roof (common research bases)Technology fusionReturning benefits to societySustainable fund circulationAccumulation of diversified research and recruitment of a variety of personnelDevelopment of core infrastructures and accumulation of intangible knowledge assetsFlexible boundary between inside and outsideーーーーIndustry-academia-government collaboration center founded on a platform formed from public education and research organizations+TIAーnano modelAssessment of performance and safetyAccumulation of intellectual assets08Organization and Outline
