-AIST’s Efforts Concerning Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake-
I would like to pray for those who lost their lives in the Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake, and would like to express my sympathies to those of the districts that are facing difficulties in recovery.
AIST has been examining the damages since the earthquake, and has been carefully going through the process of recovery. As the investigations progressed, it became clear that the damages were great. However, with the efforts of AIST staff, and many people of Tsukuba city and other related organizations, lifelines such as electricity, water supply, and the Internet have been recovered.
Although the damages of buildings and research facilities have not yet been restored, AIST has set “the Preparation Period for Resumption of R&D” and will put our best efforts into resuming research as quickly as possible while ensuring safety.
Japan is in a severe situation due to the massive disaster, and the recovery efforts are expected to take a long time. Moreover, there is still a tight supply of electricity in eastern Japan as a result of the earthquake, and our recovery efforts are in process under strict electricity usage restrictions.
Concerning AIST’s recovery process, we would be grateful for your continued understanding and cooperation.
We have been measuring radiation in the Tsukuba area, and have been providing the information to Ibaraki prefecture and Tsukuba city and have been releasing it on our website. We have also been providing the research information related to the disaster on our website. We intend to continue to provide as much information as possible and we hope that it will be of service to you.
