AIST Holds Successful First Symposium in US
June, 2002

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of Japan held its first symposium in the United States on June 11, 2002, at the Marriott Hotel in Santa Clara, CA, in cooperation with JETRO San Francisco and Patent and Licensing Exchange Co. (pl-x).

The symposium presented major results from AIST work, exploring the possibilities of technological transfers in IT research and promoting cooperation with US companies and universities. Participants numbered nearly 200, including over 120 representing business planners and product developers in IT companies, consultants for technology transfer, and representatives from universities in Silicon Valley.

The morning session consisted of a discussion on IT strategies by panelists from Stanford University, CEOs from IT companies, and executive researchers from AIST, followed by a speech on cooperation between the US and Japan. A luncheon speech covered technology transfer and licensing.

The afternoon session showcased technology on AIST IT technology, including coloring for multispectral MRI imaging, an all-in-focus microscopic camera, an ultrafast circuit using polymer devices, manipulation robots, a ubiquitous surface tactile sensor, and a therapeutic robot that made it into the Guinness Records. This was followed by a panel exhibit and a business contact session.

The symposium will be discussed in detail in the August edition of AIST Today and in the international volume of the autumn 2002 edition.
