A society in which people live a long life in good health and at ease, and a sustainable society with reduced environmental load is desired. We are contributing to life innovation by developing new technologies to evaluate health and to promote drug discovery, as well as to maintain, improve, and recover health according to individual conditions. We are also contributing to green innovation by developing technologies to reduce environmental loads using bioprocesses.

Type A (Tenure-track position)/Type B (Tenured position)

  • AIST seeks research scientists with outstanding abilities and/or potential for conducting innovative R&D activities in wide range of fields of science and technology. Research scientists will be employed for tenure-track (Type A), or tenured positions (Type B).
  • Recruitment and Employment Committeee of AIST will determine which positions are suitable for an successful applicant.
  • Tenure of an employed research scientist for Type A is 5 years, however, tenure can be reduced to 3 yeras based on decision by the committee.
  • A tenure-track research scientist can be promoted to a research scientist for a tenured position by qualifying "tenure review". The tenure review will be carried out about 18 months before tenure expires. The scope of the tenure review is to quantify contributions to AIST missions, and performance in term. In the last 5 years, more than 90% of tenure-track research scientists have been qualified.

Title Pioneering researches on advanced life science and technology
Details of Job Opportunity
We are seeking potential candidates who have outstanding academic or research background of biology, molecular biology, and genetics. Candidates are highly encouraged to implement traditional and state-of-the-art biology expecting serendipity (quite new findings and/or proof of outstanding concept). Candidates are requested to demonstrate new idea, hypothesis, concept, strategy when being interviewed. The main topics candidates would be requested to implement are;
  1. Evolution of life including origin of life, evolution of organism, symbiosis and synergism and so forth;
  2. Life science addressing differentiation, development, immune system, (epi-)genetics, computational biology or whatever life science themes that remain untouched.
Candidates must have enhanced communicative competence, cooperativeness, and linguistic competence for acquiring worldwide reputation. Successful candidates would be assigned to the most appropriate research group in one of the four Research Institutes in Life Science and Biotechnology Department at AIST. Successful candidates would be offered for either tenure-track job position (Type A), or fixed-term appointment for 5 to 10 years (Type D).

  • AIST seeks research scientists with professional expertise and worldwide reputation for conducting highly prioritized R&D projects by AIST.
  • Annual Salary System, which is a category of results-oriented salary system, are applied to successful applicants. Applicants should have a Ph. D. degree, or equivalent experiences on the R&D subjects.
  • These positions are not tenure-track, and a tenure review is not scheduled for these categories of research scientists.
  • Tenure is up to 5 years, and reappointment is possible for one further term.
