- Life Science and Biotechnology
- To realize a society where even elderly people can be healthy and active, AIST covers wide range of life science, such as genome science, molecular biology, medical science, human welfare science and so on. Production technology for biomaterials and related technologies will lead to a sustainable society.
- Information Technology and Electronics
- Information networks, such as the internet, are expanding, however, a number of controversial points are raised, i.e. the digital divide, insufficient capacity, too much energy consumption, safety issues. AIST is striving for the establishment of user-friendly and highly safe information technologies.
- Nanotechnology, Materials and Manufacturing
- Atomic and molecular technologies in nanometer scale, as well as techniques of extremely precise machining of materials are studied. AIST also contributes to materials and manufacturing technologies, in order to realize none environmental abuse, safety, and reliability.
- Environment and Energy
- We place an emphasis on researches to cope with environmental risks, promotion of recycling, technologies combating global warming. To strengthen dynamic social and economic activities, we also strive towards innovative technologies for efficient utilization and conservation energy, and environment-friendly energy sources.
- Geological Survey and Applied Geoscience
- To realize sustainable development of society, AIST will collect and provide basic geoscientific data. The data will be used in preservation of the nation’s land, development of resource and energy, and environmental conservation.
- Metrology and Measurement Science
- To support industrial development and smooth economic activities in international markets, AIST is working on development and supply of measurement standards, including calibration of measurement instruments. Scientific research is also performed in metrology and relevant fields.
