In view of the increasing importance in recent years of the need for international cooperation in the field of science and technology, various measures are being taken to encourage such cooperation on a global scale. The Institute has long been actively committed to projects for international research cooperation, offering such measures through its International Research Coperation Section. The various systems available are fully made use of to dispatch our research staff abroad and to invite researchers from overseas, and at the same time we actively participate in many international conferences and research missions. We also have many visitors from abroad. With the aim of contributing to cooperation in research and development efforts on a global scale, we do our best to fill the ever-diversifying needs of people in various countries in the world.
As the major achievement of our international research cooperation that have already been completed, we can cite such projects as the quality control of glassware (Sri Lanka), wooden composite materials (the Philippines), natural absorbents for recovering spilled oil (Indonesia), treatment of waste water (Indonesia), optical micro gas sensors (Belgium), micro-algae (Rumania), molten carbonate fuel cells (U.S.A.), graphite intercalation compounds (France), hydrogen-storage alloys (Switzerland), etc. The major projects now under way include our cooperation
rendered for the research on glass melting under micro-gravity (U.S.A.), purification of water (the Philippines), ion beam (Germany) and micro-algae (Israel).
In the bilateral collaboration under scientific and technical coperation agreements closed between the governments concerned, cooperation on research is under way with about 20 research institutes in 10 countries, including France, Sweden, Italy, South Korea, Russia, etc.
Our group training program on "glass technology", initiated in compliance with a request from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has a history of 20 years. Not being limited just to persons from Asian countries, 172 trainees have so far been accepted from 28 countries in Africa, South America, etc. and the course is still at work as "advanced glass technology".
