Catalysts for Coal Liquefaction

Oil and coal are presently the main sources of energy, and energy from other sources such as nuclear fusion and solar light will not be available for many years. Hence, technology is required to make fossil energy consumption efficient and environmentally friendly. The continued stable supply of fuels produced from petroleum resources is of particular concern.

Stable supplies of coal, however, are readily available worldwide, and the known resources of minable coal are four times that of oil. Processes are now being developed to make coal react under high temperatures and pressures for conversion into liquid fuel. Catalysts are key to the coal liquefaction reaction, and the Institute is actively engaged in basic research into catalysts, their improvement, and development.
