4. Fast X-ray CT Scanner
X-ray CT scanners, employing the transmission of attenuated X-rays through media consisting of different densities and elements, allow us to visualize the inner structure of an object in a non-invasive manner. In the present study, development of an ultra fast X-ray CT scanner is in progress. The system is capable of completing a single scan in 3.6 ms, approximately 200 times faster than the conventional X-ray CTs in medical use.
Such a quick scan allows for measuring 3D phase-distribution patterns of the two-phase flow frequently observed in nuclear or chemical plants. In addition, the non-invasive technique is particularly useful for flow pattern measurement in geometrically complicated flow channels such as heat exchangers. It is highly expected that these unique features of the fast X-ray CT scanner will pave the way for broader applications in measurement of non-transparent soil-rock flow, gas distribution in fluidized beds, and gas-water immersion in rock fissures.
