Kyushu National Industrial Research Institute (KNIRI) was founded in 1964 in Kyushu as one of 15 institutes belonging to Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), MITI.
The institute aims at R & D of advanced industrial technologies along the national projects such as New Sunshine Program, Industrial Science and Technology Frontier Program, Regional Technology Development Program and International Research Cooperation, and in addition, contributes to the progress of the Kyushu area through the development of industrial technologies.
KNIRI, since its establishment, has developed a number of new materials and new technologies for manufacturing Shirasu-balloons from volcanic ejecta, high performance pich-based carbon fiber, foamed metals, carbon/ceramic composites and synthesized mica, as well as advanced technologies for machining of ceramics and processing of crude pottery stone.
National Research Institute should intend to create the technical seeds of new industries in future and solve the technical problems for keeping the global environment, energy and resources. As the only one national research organ on industrial technology in Kyushu ,KNIRI will enhance the activity on basic and creative studies, and act the rolls of a leading research institute in Kyushu and an advanced research center for the world. So, KNIRI concentrates upon main research work on new materials of carbon, ceramics, metal, organics, and their composites, and, new begins the research on utilization of bio-resources in tropical & semi-tropical zone as physiological active substances, bio-mass etc. And moreover , KNIRI promotes R&D of advanced industrial technologies in cooperation with other institutes of AIST, universities , local government research center and private companies. In addition, international research cooperation will be intensively carried out with Asian developing nations including China and Korea as well as advanced nations.
We hope to have your kind cooperation and assistance to our activities.
