Profile of HNIRI

This institute was established as the Government Industrial Development Laboratory, Hokkaido, in 1960. Since then, R & D have been promoted in fields such as advanced coal utilization technology, fluidized bed technology, pollution control technology, waste processing and utilization technology and cold region-related technology.
Recently, in regard to the national research system, basic and original research and international contribution have come into strong demand. In order to meet this demand, the institute has renamed to the present name, Hokkaido National Industrial Research Institute, in October,1993, and the reorganization of the research fields has put into practice. Being the base of the hitherto research basis as well as Hokkaido's geographical-regional characteristics, there has been new emphasis on microgravity-applied technology and low temperature/cold region technology. We are aiming at contributing international society by dissemination of our research results.
In addition, some R & D projects are set up based on regional needs to contribute to the promotion of advanced technology in this region. Furthermore, we play an important role in coordination of cooperative work in broad research fields between industrial, governmental and academic research organizations in Hokkaido by using the network of the 15 research institutes under our agency. Still more, for positively coping with international exchange and contribution ,we are putting into operation of several international research cooperative projects.
Based on this plan, we are promoting stress on the following researches.

1) Application of Microgravity for Technological Innovations
Development of production technologies of new functional materials
Development of fluid handling technologies
Development of advanced combustion technology

2) Biotechnology
Utilization of biomass-resources in cold regions
Survey of useful micro-organisms acting at low temperatures
Precise organic synthesis using enzymes and development of new catalysts
Research on the function of useful enzymes and their performance.

3) Resources and Energy R & D
Basic studies and development of clean coal technologies
Development of new energy technologies utilizing novel resources
Research on methane-water clathrates
Establishment of advanced energy conversion technologies for cold regions

4) Material Science and Technology
Design and production technologies of new materials
Technologies for controlling the structure of high performance materials
Functionalization and control of the interface between different phases and analytical chemistry of solutions
Synthesis of functional organic materials.
Development of low temperature proof materials and their evaluation/application
Mechatronics on snow-related technologies

5) Global Environment and Prevention of Environmental Pollution
Establishment of highly efficient combustion technologies of coal to reduce environmental pollution
Development of technology to utilize and process waste materials
CO2 fixation technology
