Tectonic Rotation

@Tectonic developement of the Japanese islands is obviously related to the back-arc spreading of the Japan Sea during Miocene. I have investigated the geology of central Japan, where Northeat and Southwest Japan arcs have met in the middle of Miocene (20-15 Ma). Paleomagnetic approach is most effective for resolving the tectonic deformation of central Japan, because rotational movement, as well as vertical motion, is common in active island arc.

Collision Tectonics

@In addition, collision of the Izu-Ogasawara arc with central Japan is also important for deformation in Japan. Recent geological and geophysical investigations suggest that the active island arc of the Izu-Ogasawara arc on the Philippine Sea Plate has been collided since Middle Miocene. This strongly suggests that the collision tectonics has affected to the deformation of central Japan during late Neogene.

Integrated Stratigraphy

@An informal working group of the Miocene Integrated Stratigraphy (MIS) was established in 1995 to construct a high-resolution time scale for northeast Pacific region.
