Introduction

The stable supply of minerals to the domestic needs is one of the most important policy of Japanese government. Iron, steel and nonferrous metals including base and rare metals are essential materials for the sustainable development of Japanese fundamental industries such as telecommunications and electrical appliance and automobile industries. For our life activities, industrial minerals is also important materials. Cement and aggregate such as sand, gravel and crushed stone used in construction industries are in a group of the highest annual productions and very few self-sufficient materials of Japan.

Kuroko Mine The Geological Survey of Japan, GSJ, assumes responsibility for fundamental parts of national mineral development activities. The Mineral Resources Department of GSJ is conducting a wide range of research works in line with mineral resources analysis, the genesis of ore deposits and exploration methods for metal and industrial mineral deposits.

The department consists of three sections; Resources Analysis Section, Ore Genesis Section and Experimental Mineralogy Section.The number of researchers is 18 including the director in FY 1996.
