Introduction
The stable supply of minerals to the domestic needs is one of the most important
policy of Japanese government. Iron, steel and nonferrous metals including base and
rare metals are essential materials for the sustainable development of Japanese fundamental
industries such as telecommunications and electrical appliance and automobile industries.
For our life activities, industrial minerals is also important materials. Cement and
aggregate such as sand, gravel and crushed stone used in construction industries are
in a group of the highest annual productions and very few self-sufficient materials of Japan.
The Geological Survey of Japan, GSJ, assumes responsibility for fundamental parts
of national mineral development activities. The Mineral Resources Department of GSJ is
conducting a wide range of research works in line with mineral resources analysis, the
genesis of ore deposits and exploration methods for metal and industrial mineral deposits.
The department consists of three sections; Resources Analysis Section, Ore Genesis
Section and Experimental Mineralogy Section. The number of researchers is 18 including
the director in FY 1996.
