STARMER and NEW STARMER

STARMER

STARMER project (1987-92) was Japan and France cooperative research project on the multi-disciplinary studies on rifting activity in the Southwestern Pacific. Research cruises were concentrated in the North Fiji Basin. STARMER based on Science and Technology Agency, Japan and IFREMER, Institute of French Marine Development, which were the main organization of each countries.

Effort of Starmer project was concentrated into North Fiji Basin, the most prominent active marginal sea with complicated seafloor spreading systems in the Southwestern margin of Pacific Ocean.

NEW STARMER

NEW STARMER (1994-1999) starts with Japan and France for the comparative studies of active marginal basin ridges such as, Manus, Woodlark, North Fiji, Lau, Havre basins.

First cruise was carried out in August-September, 1994 in the northern part of North Fiji Basin with IFREMER's Research Vessel l'Atalante

l'Atalante.

Second cruise is proposed to carry out in FY1995 in the Manus Basin (Bismark Sea, north of Papua New Guinea) with JAMSTEC's Yokosuka and Shinkai 6500.
