R/V Hakureimaru is used for Geological Survey of Japan's Geological Mapping Project around Japan. She is specialized geological survey vessel with various geological and geophysical survey equipments. Metal Mining Agency of Japan owns and operates the vessel. She is also used for NEDO's CO2 program, and JNOC's Antarctic Survey program.
Offshore Mapping Project has been carried out by Geological Survey of Japan since 1974.
At present, Western offshore of Hokkaido is survyed with 40 days cruises every year during 1993-1997.
