GMT information

GMT (Generic Mapping Tools)

GMT (Generic Mapping Tools) is a powerful data mapping tool package on UNIX system. It is developped by Wessel and Smith (EOS, v.72, p.441-446, 1991) and freeware! Current version is 3.0 (1995/08).
You can get a brief introduction of GMT 3.0 by authors on AGU, EOS electric supplement.New Version of the Generic Mapping Tools Releasedon Aug 15, 1995.

GMT has various strong points,

  1. High quality ("camera-ready") PostScript output.
  2. Fit to process geophysical data.
  3. Support various geographical map projections.
  4. Support 3D plot with mesh, surface plot.
  5. Powerful gridding functions.
  6. Grid, image data manupilation.
  7. Support 24bit color.
  8. Contains resolution selectable coastline data.
  9. Portable among various UNIX systems.
  10. NetCDF binary data support.

To demonstrate the power of GMT, check the example figures of Tutorial and Cookbook of GMT v.3.

These example figures were output as PostScript files. They were converted into sunraster format file with ps2ras command of GMT. Further, sunraster files were converted GIF format files with the commands of pbmplus package.

Don't you want to use GMT? If you are at the site where GMT is installed, start to use it with GMT Technical Reference and Cookbook in gmt/docs directory. If you are not at such site, try to get GMT and install on your machine.
